Solar Eclipse are when the moon and sun are right on top of each other blocking off light from the sun. This can last from 10 seconds to 7 minutes in total. The way for this to work the moon has to be in a new moon phase. This year’s solar eclipse that happened on April 8th was what we call a total eclipse where the light was completely covered. Each eclipse ranges from about 3 years apart, and is also known for 5 or less eclipses every year just in different ranges of the world. Aside from the scientific definition and sense of the eclipse many ancient and nowaday beliefs believe that the eclipse is a spiritual awakening or a sign of doom. Many people have brought together the idea the solar eclipse was due to demons attracting the sun to bring darkness around all sources of life. This comes from the beliefs of ancient greek. The most reasonable explanation they had was that the Gods were mad at civilization and would allow terror to cross.
In the Tahitian myths we see a completely overturned story they believed the moon and sun were in love and once in a while they would finally get to be together and get lost in moment allowing to create stars to find their way back each other. There are many more superstitions like in mexican culture when pregnant with you must wear a red ribbon to ward of evil spirits from touching or consuming the baby. People still believe in these superstitions and state that it is either good or bad. They say the phase of the eclipse of total darkness is a sign or rebirth and a new beginning. But many sources have dark turns, like bad omen casted upon earth like a curse. Almost all religions/cultures provide their own story to express about the eclipse. It is something we can all relate to which allows us to see others and their deep rooted culture. Another example for this is the catholic/christian religions belief talked about in the bible.Straight from the text in Joel 2:31 of Prophecy and Omens you can see exactly what they are prophesied about what will one day happen. In all different cultures all have unique ideas mythology around the solar eclipse.Maybe they all have point in thought process or maybe it was just because our ancestors couldn’t comprehend the idea of the eclipse with the technologies we have today.
